Music video – Check ’em from the Muludja Mob

2 January 2018

Bowel cancer is common for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people and takes the lives of elders who are the strength and knowledge, and hold the stories and culture. A simple test can find bowel changes early and save lives. It’s a test that all people 50 or over should do every two years. This video tells the story of families – the young and old and everyone in between – and the way that bowel cancer has changed their lives.

Indigenous Hip Hop Projects artists Dion Brownfield, Benny Walker, Aman Bayatly and Grayson Huddart came together with Menzies School of Health Research and the Department of Health on beautiful Gooniyandi country to make a music message about culture, country, bush medicine, health and having the bowel screening test. The Muludja mob were amazing – superstars!

(Lyrics) IHHP Menzies – Muludja – Check-‘Em if ya wanna live longer

Spoken Word – Stars Aunty Helen and Aunty June
We sleep under the stars when we go out bush
We look up at the stars across the sky
They tell us the time and look em to guide us
The Morning Star make us get ready
This is the sign the message for us to get on to it early
Sit em and talk em and do em and check em

Verse One
Come on old people this one is for you mob
Women and men its every bodies job
If you want our culture to survive
Take the test coz it can save our lives

We want you to live till one hundred and five
Go out bush walking along the riverside
Hunting for Wawanyi, having a swim
Looking for Garwi, catching some bream

Eating healthy bush tucker and fresh meat
Keeps us Binjidi and keep us neat.
Bowel Cancer we wanna beat it
And If its found early then we can treat it

Munju and Alcohol draw the line
Bowel cancer can happen without a sign
3 countrymen each week pass away
Do the test, do it today
